Diane L. Coutu is a senior editor at HBR specializing in psychology and business.




Darrell Rigby is the head of Bain & Company’s Global Innovation, Global Retail, and Winning in Turbulence practices. During more than 30 years of consulting, Rigby has led assignments in a variety of industrial and consumer industries, including more than 100 of the world’s leading retailers.

Rigby is the author of the book Winning in Turbulence (Harvard Business Review Press, 2009). He is also the author of Management Tools: An Executive’s Guide (Bain & Co), which he has published annually for the past 16 years. In 1993, he founded and launched Bain’s Management Tools Survey.

Rigby is a speaker and author on strategy issues, including both-brain innovation, open-market innovation, managing in turbulence, customer-led growth, and change management.


Matthew S. Olson (olsonm@executiveboard.com) is an executive director at the Corporate Executive Board, an advisory and performance improvement network of leaders of the world’s largest public and private organizations, based in Washington, DC.
